When Uxía first asked me to take the photographs for her new record I was not sure that I would accept such a challenge. I had done the violins as guest artist in her previous work but this was the first time someone asked me to contribute to a record with something other than music, which was up to then the habitual thing.
Not satisfied, Uxía explained her project to me in greater detail and she started off by communicating the essentially Atlantic taste of the different musics and went on to mention the artist featuring in her record, all of them from different parts of the Atlantic Portuguese speaking countries.
Then, it took me little time to get involved as I was seduced by the idea of visually representing this notion. With this in mind, I thought it would be very interesting if I could make some artistic contributions using precisely those materials that make up our landscape and that have been changing places for centuries, perhaps millennia, across this sea that unites us. Metaphorically speaking, musical influences among the different Atlantic cultures change in the same manner.
Any shell, sand, a shard of glass, a piece of wood or even some seed we can find in any beach bear testimony of this constant flow of time and space.
The remaining work was simple enough. Finding locations for each idea and topic, lugging materials from one place to the next, sometimes fighting the elements: the sun, the wind, the tides... an eventually the photograph as the final expression.
All this time-space frozen in an image...the sounds of that sea are registered in a phonographic medium.
